Toshiba announces HD DVD bedecked Qosmio laptop
Toshiba has announced the first HD DVD laptop, fitting since the standard is their baby, and it should be available in March along with most of the other first-gen HD DVD products. Their new Qosmio, with a model number unbeknownst to us, should mirror the capabilities of their existing line, such as Media Center OS, analog TV tuner, and juicy 1440x900 17-inch LCD displays, but it also throws in a GeForce Go 7 chip from NVIDIA to pump 1080p signals, presumably out a DVI port since we don't see that resolution hitting their LCDs just yet. Toshiba is also touting the included Dolby Home Theater sound for their new Qosmio, with some sort of simulated surround sound and boosted bass response. No word on price, but we'd be kidding ourselves to think Toshiba won't demand a hefty premium for the drive they're sticking in there, and we can't really blame them. DVI??? no...try HDMI out. Believe it.
A friend of mine has this computer in Belgium. It's screen is beautiful and it comes loaded with Microsoft's New Media Center. Your right, it's not cheap. The downside, it's big and heavy. Nothing new in the way PC makers design their laptops. I myself would like to see the new offerings from Apple in the coming weeks. As per usual, Apple will most likely come up with some brilliant innovation and will most likely lead the pack soon enough refining what PC manufacturers offer with slightly more style and ease of operating.
HD-DVD drive? That implies it's only got a DVD-ROM drive (hybrid). So for the money you get no burner functionality at all... unless they stuck in two drives... which might explain the weight.

#2...super doubtful that your friend has THIS one. Perhaps the current Qosmio that looks the same but not this one...
#3...wrong again. this thing will burn all current disc formats AND play HD-DVD movies. one of the pluses of this spec. one optical drive 100% backwards compatible with previous disc standards.
