TiVoToGo for Mac, for real?
Since writing about this one particular Cupertino-based firm always seem to fire up vitriol in the comments, we're gonna go a different route here and try to fly below the Google radar. TiVoLovers has pictures of what is supposedly TiVoToGo running on a non-Windows operating system from the company that also makes a darn nice DAP (hint: it's not BeOS). No word on when this software will be available for the few of us who happen to own said fruit-inspired machines.

Wooooooh, hope that's real.... so many companies promise OS X versions, but few follow through with it :-D
avanderveen @ Jan 9th 2006 9:07PM
Um... I know this is completely off-topic, but what happened to that days of Christmas thing where you guys gave stuff away. Because I haven't seen another post up about it since the HTC thing so no one knows who the winners are! Unless I just missed the post, which I'm sure I didn't.
Taylor Alexander @ Jan 9th 2006 9:11PM
Ah, yes, the old keyword switcheroo... Problem is, all it takes is one idiot to mention "Apple" in a comment, and all that effort is lost... Oh, wait, damn...

Actually, plenty follow through with it, but Tivo has been disgraceful. What about other features that have been left off of the Mac, like sending shows to your Tivo (TivoGoBack)? Hell, their current installer doesn't work because of a known problem with the "AddFirewallEntry" post-install script. Have they bothered fixing it? No, just mark it as "incompatible". TivoToGo has been promised "soon" for over a year now, and a screen shot is not going to make me feel any less shafted.
I love my Tivo box, but I've lost any faith in the company. Maybe their Series3 will save them, but I say bring on a Mac Mini and Front Row!
booboo @ Jan 9th 2006 9:15PM
What is all the hype about tivo to go? I don't see any excitement with carrying around pre-recorded shows.
I would like to hear from you guys what you guys are planning to do with this software. It might change my mind.

Any idea if this will work for DirecTV Tivos ?

Very cool, thanks for posting this. Please don't be afraid to post Apple info... I am sure the vast majority of your readership don't mind the info, Apple customers or not.
Its my experience that Apple (or Microsoft) "haters" are insecure and generally uninteresting people seeking to feel secure about whatever product they have purchased (or given by their parents). They are the type of person most cherished by marketing brainwashers as they don't (can't?) make choices based informed self-arwareness and once swayed to one side or the other become "loyal" because they actually believe there is a "side" to be on.
Those people are fortunately the minority, but they do so like to rattle their little brain-cages.

way to be discrete and put mac right in the title... lol. no but seriously i think this is about time. Tivo was made for mac. its like the perfect union. windows can use their own OS for DVR. i feel like soon, mac might be all tivo has
Ravi @ Jan 9th 2006 9:38PM
This could easily be a fake...I could make one right now :D..
Photoshop the tivo window
take screenshot of mac desktop
paste the tivo window
view in preview
snap a pic

Won't work on DirecTivos. None of the DirecTivos, Series 1 or 2, will ever support Tivo2Go or Home Media, Tivo's already said as much. Same for the HD DirecTivo. DirecTV has their own DVR so no more Tivo features will be added.
That network support will only be available on the Series 3 HD Tivo which has dual Cable Card support.

*sigh.. puh-lease... around 30 million Mac users.. Dell just mentioned a few days ago that 85% of their sales are CORPORATE. so only 15% of their sales are to PEOPLE in HOMES.
IOW.. it's not that hard to find/meet a Mac user...

"What is all the hype about tivo to go? I don't see any excitement with carrying around pre-recorded shows."
Have you been living under a rock for the past year? It seems like every other tech story recently has been about one kind of mobile video content or another: watching videos on iPods, PSPs, PDAs, and other portable devices; TV downloads at the iTunes store; Google's video store; TiVoToGo; etc. You may not be interested in this, but plenty of other people are.

The new Mac sw was at the CES booth, on a nastily silver spray painted P*werbook. Word on it's release was "mid-year". Tivo already has some beta sign-ups out for a coupla products, get in early if you're interested.
As to DirectTiVo, anything to do with those is DirecTV's call, not TiVo's. With DTV's migration to their own boxes I wouldn't expect much from 'em though. Of course, one can always install a 'regular' TiVo software image on 'em...
Alex @ Jan 10th 2006 1:39AM
> i feel like soon, mac might be all tivo has
Yeah, and in 12 hours Jobs will probably show a mac mini FrontRow DVR, and TiVo will have no one.
G. Snyder @ Jan 10th 2006 6:26PM
Great. Would be nice if they could fix all of TiVo desktop. The second version of TiVo desktop 'broke' the earlier install, and photo streaming was disabled. To top it off, the TiVo uninstall script was garbage, so you could not even fully get the components off to revert to the earlier working version. Piss-poor if you ask me, and a disgrace from a software development standpoint. I love TiVo, but they make me sick to my stomach sometimes. So much potential wasted.
