Good old Neuros, makers of
such products as the
442 PMP
and
MPEG-4 recorder, are getting all
gushy with open source
again. The Register
is reporting that in a private demo at CES, Neuros revealed that its upcoming Video Recorder (the Recorder III,
pictured, for those of you keeping track) and Neuros III DAC MP3 player will be Linux-based and feature dual-core TI
CPUs. Additionally, the company will update the 442 to the 442v2, giving it DVD-quality recording, 40GB or 60GB
configurations, 3.6-inch TFT LCD, and like the other upcoming devices, 96KHz, 24-bit sound. The Recorder III is a hard
drive-based unit that will supposedly sport Ethernet and possibly WLAN and an FM transmitter, like the 442v2. As if
this wasn't enough, they also promise to ship an updated version of the Recorder II with a hard drive, a quarter prior
to the Recorder III's tentative Q3 release. The 442v2 is said to be available "Q2/Q3," the DAC in Q1 2007,
but no pricing info is available for these nor any of the other announced products.

Meh, apple is good but ipod sucks. Overrated in other words tis a shame people actually go bezerk over them.
As for this product its the first one of its kind that I see out there. Is it a new thing? I don't know but it sure looks sexy and worthwhile.

Why do iPods suck exactly? Have you seen the other/older Neuros players? They truly suck, the older ones were MASSIVE bricks. The Recorder 2 is certainly nothing special, I mean sure, a dual-core CPU on a tiny little player has some bragging rights, but the first Creative Zen video player almost had everything this does, with a bigger screen. If you really need lots of space and all sorts of recording capabilty, Archos really has worthwhile stuff. I would laugh various parts of my male anatomy off if someone walked up to me with that dinky 3.6 inch screen tacked to yet another brick and said it was better than my iPod (yes I realize that an iPod screen is only 2.5, but at least everything else on it is better and/or smaller).

very exciting news. and to those neuros haters out there wondering why the rest of us love our "giant brick" players, two words. open source. hmm or maybe two more... linux based. either way.. 'nuff said

The Recorder III will be awesome for PSP users. It wasn't clear from the page, but it looks like it's the Recorder II with a hard drive. How sweet would it be to just let it sit there, plugged into cable, recording all the TV you don't have time to watch. Then, when you have a flight, long car drive, whatever, just bring it along, pop a memory stick in (or connect over usb) and play it on your psp. Repeat for everything else you want to see. Even better would be if the psp could just treat it as a remote HD and play over USB, but it's my understanding the PSP doesn't have that capability. I wouldn't count on Sony to add it either, considering that this is competition for Sony's Connect pay video on demand service.

The plus here is that the 442v2 will be open source linux... which means play time for all of us and no difficulty with drm or format incompatibility
