Keepin' it real fake, part XIX: the $9 "PSP"

Engadget reader Richard Heard came across this "PSP" in the Queen Victoria Markets, in Melbourne, Australia. The price: a mere AU$12 (US$9). Of course, this isn't the first PSP clone we've seen, but it may win the award for the cheapest one to actually dare to include "PSP" in its branding. Just who do they think they're fooling?

All of you act like PSP is a bad system, it's better than Nintendo Revolution and PS3... I can't say that about X-Box 360 though, it is quite awesome. But PSP does have a lot of good qualities you aren't looking at. Sure the games are limited, but there will soon be an explosion of games for PSP, just like PS2, Gamecube, and X-Box.

Err, the website stamped on the front of that psp fake has the name Richard Heard stamped on their homepage, the same guy that "came accross" this in aus.

#16-The guy's name is on the PSP as well...he did that so people can't copy the picture and not have that in the picture so the picture stays in his possession and if it doesn't, it gets posted with his website, so he can assume all credibility

Heads up, readers - this kind of piracy goes on throughout the world. Many times, the rip offs are so apparent (such as this one) that they seem almost hilarious. My wife is from Indonesia, you can find "Video Game Systems" that look just like the old 8-Bit Nintendo Entertainment System. Many times, the cartridges are packed full of pirated games as well. This one just happens to be the first to look like the PSP. Believe me, it will not be the last.

Can I just let you know that the Queen Victoria Markets in Melbourne arn't usually like this, the worst they manage to rip is sticking a really bad clip-art apple and the brand name on an obviously off-white ipod accessory.

It's unfortunate that the Original manufacturers of PSP couldn't bite a loss for two or three years during the initial stages of the Original PSP being on the market and not price the product so increadibly high. If the Original were made available to the general public at the onset at a lower price, piracy would be less likely to occur in the first place. Also, my son owns one of these, and I am pretty sure the knock-off cannot do what the real PSP can do.

Hey Otis, this isn't really a serious knock off mate, its just there so that little kids will see them, buy them and then can pretend they have a PSP, which at the age of 4, can almost definitely not afford.
