Engadget Podcast 073 - 03.28.06
The Podcast is back! We've been
out of the action for a couple of weeks but we aren't going anywhere -- except to Vegas next week for CTIA. But we're
catching up this week on all the video game news and rumors surrounding the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Revolution (or
should we say Go?), the first new TiVo we've seen in, well, a while, and Microsoft's latest delay for Vista, which puts
us squarely back to January 2007. We also decided to snag a couple of those emails you've been sending in and give 'em
some air time, so listen in to the latest ep, we'll do our best to make sure it's worth your wait.Get

Regarding minute 16 -- I think the word you're looking for is "synergy."

Come on guys. The Xbox 360 is not being sold stand alone for less than it is in america.
It has been pretty well reported that those deals are in conjunction with cellular and internet package deals.
Old news.

Dudes! PS3 = simultaneous worldwide release!

Check the second paragraph.

Thank you Conrad. You guys obviously missed a whole plethora of PS3 information over the past couple weeks...

at last
i was beginning to worry about a sudden cease of podcasting

This is about the idea of 'podcasting' in general.
I recently the TDG Research paper by Colin Dixon and Michael Greeson which indicated that our idea of scores of people actually downloading and listening to podcasts on their iPods is probably an illusion and that 80% of these files are played on desktop PCs and rarely, if ever, are played on mobile devices. My boss has recently become enamoured of the idea of 'podcasts' and, of course, thinks that people use ONLY the iPod for this...so..iTunes is the only way to go. But, I see that you offer a variety of options. I understand that iTunes doesn't provide any usage statistics on the number of people who download your stuff from iTunes (True?) but, can you say which of the formats you offer get the most hits?
J.T. Mill @ Mar 28th 2006 4:53PM
Some of your info is kind of old. Joystiq had a post eariler saying Nintendo Go is not the new name.

A request - how about an xml feed of the AAC version, in addition to the MP3? iTunes seems to be able to play that file, and it's smaller - would subscribing to a podcast xml of an AAC work in iTunes?
Thanks for coming back!

To 8bitjake or whoever made the Wikipedia page on "ungoogleability"; I've edited it as this word existed befor eit was used in the podcast (although it was the first place I heard it). So, just a heads up.

re: TorontoGuy. I've never listened to a podcast on my laptop. The reason I like podcasts is that I can listen to them as I commute, do yardwork, cook dinner etc.
Ryan Block @ Mar 28th 2006 8:36PM
Ungoogleability, ha! I've never seen those links before! Now, someone want to change the Wiki entry to reflect who actually said that? (Me?) Very funny stuff!
Best, Ryan
Ryan Block @ Mar 28th 2006 9:37PM
Btw Kerry, I was making a joke -- it's a reference to Space Ghost: Coast to Coast ("synergisticality"). http://snard.com/sg/guide/?ep=57&fmt=0
Eddie @ Mar 28th 2006 10:36PM
I use podcasts to wind down at night before i go to bed. I usually use my ipod and have never listened to one on my computer.
Carlos @ Mar 29th 2006 12:56AM
Hah, the Wikipedia author jipped Ryan on credit for the use of obscure words. But I can't fault him, took me two or three podcasts many months ago to figure out whose voice was who...

Thanks for yet another PodCast!
I just wonder, is it possible to write out the file-size for all the versions? At first I thought the .ogg was broken since it was just 15 MB.
Anyway, a xml-feed of the .ogg-version would be nice. If it's possible in the future :)
Daveoc64 @ Apr 3rd 2006 7:35AM
In connection with comment 12, I've never understood why the iTunes feed is the MP3. Surely it makes sense to have that as the enhanced AAC.
I suppose it is the MP3 so that it is compatible with more devices.
Would it be possible to make a feed, either in iTunes or that could be put into iTunes by us for the AAC version?
