Oh dear lord, we aren't even through this year's
CES /
Macworld one-two punch and we just happened upon some distressing news for the 200,000+ tech trade show-goers and media that attend both: they're overlapping in 2009. AGAIN. Granted, things appear to be a little different this time around -- Steve and the Cupertino crew will be firing the first shots on Tuesday, January 6th, with Macworld continuing through Friday the 9th, while CES opens up on Thursday, the 8th, and wraps up Sunday, the 11th. But didn't Jobs and Shapiro say this thing would never happen again? Actually, come to think of it, no -- they merely "agreed it would be nice if they didn't overlap." Yeah, it
would really would be nice, guys, you should try making it happen more than once every couple of years.

365 days in a year...is it so hard to not pick the same effing day???
Mr.Tech @ Jan 13th 2008 10:08AM
Is it true that CES will be hosted in Chicago in 2009?
CUBSWILLWIN @ Jan 13th 2008 10:40AM
too true... But thi is happening on purpose. They are trying to confuce the innocent blogger and pull them into mac world. It's just to have a bigger audience.
And about the CES in chicago, I totally hope so! I live there but I don't have the money to get on a plane to california.
Mike P. @ Jan 13th 2008 1:40PM
CES is/was in Las Vegas, which is in Nevada, not California. A little bit closer to Chicago, then. =)
CUBSWILLWIN @ Jan 13th 2008 2:01PM
sorry. I actually got the 2 states mixed up.
Anth @ Jan 13th 2008 5:10PM
Its unlikely CES 2009 will be in Chicago. CEA's contract with Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority runs out after the 2011 show..

Oliver @ Jan 13th 2008 9:24AM
haha, those extra times are just those "one more thing" shows... Funny how years after jobs used that phrase, its still one of the most memorable.
And didnt you guys say Steve was gonna announce something "supersecret" on the 16th at a movie production show? Could It really be a camera?
Mark @ Jan 13th 2008 9:29AM
ah well, it'll give gizmodo somewhere to go :P
SirPasta117 @ Jan 13th 2008 10:42AM
Ha ha ha!!!! think everyone who goes to CES next year needs to bring a TV-B-GONE :)
Grant @ Jan 13th 2008 1:49PM
zing!
my thoughts exactly!
roberto @ Jan 13th 2008 9:43AM
i think it's made on purpouse... kind of "think different"... we are different... we make our show while all other sheeps go to the CES... and so on.
pure marketing.
Homeboy @ Jan 13th 2008 10:00AM
Yes it's all marketing and Apple are experts at it. I bet that they will be hyping MacWorld 2009 like crazy in order to steal as many visitors from CES as possible. They simply believe that they are better than everyone else.
DT @ Jan 13th 2008 9:59AM
Oh come on, quit complaining...who actually sticks around to Thursday of Macworld? Anything that NEEDS to be seen will be revealed by Tuesday. I can see how it would be annoying to those firms who have to exhibit at both shows, though.
caleb @ Jan 13th 2008 10:04AM
Damn them. Making the bloggers work one week a year.
nixyz123 @ Jan 13th 2008 10:06AM
Dont ask me who I am or how I know this....
Here goes
No sub-notebook
Slimmer macbook pro with no optical drive and flash memory, it will still remain 13.3 but significantly lighter(Check the panasonic line to see notebooks of even 14.1 can be made super light even with in-built optical drives...so its doable)
Wiimax for all MBPs and Macbooks
Blu-ray drives for MBPs and Macbooks
announcement of 3G Iphone and iphone SDK
Update of Mac mini and appletv( apple tv will become the DVR media center etc)
Others...
brian @ Jan 13th 2008 10:20AM
"Slimmer macbook pro with no optical drive and flash memory, it will still remain 13.3"
there never was a 13.3" macbook pro, dumb ass.
Rae @ Jan 13th 2008 12:48PM
blu-ray in a macbook but not a mac pro? that makes sense
Grant @ Jan 13th 2008 1:52PM
nixyz123: "Blu-ray drives for MBPs and Macbooks"

Duhhhh i knows hows to reads!
Silenthillnight @ Jan 13th 2008 2:22PM
The time I see an iPhone SDK will be the same time Apple starts distributing OS X to 3rd parties.
Steffen Jobbs @ Jan 13th 2008 10:30AM
And one more thing.....Apple FTW.
In ten years, Apple will be more than a cult, it will be a true religion. You're not welcome in the kingdom of Apple.
Ellianth @ Jan 13th 2008 12:57PM
It's gonna be great when steve jobs gets old and tells all his worshipers (such as yourself) to come with him to the edge of some big cliff. Then he's gonna tell you guys to jump with him. Hopefully news stations cover it, like the mass cow suicide in south park.
Steffen Jobbs @ Jan 17th 2008 8:11PM
When the time comes to leap, I'll take a deep breath and yell "Today is a good day to die." I'll be happy to fulfill the prophecy of "There is something in the air." If I'm lucky I'll fall on my fellow zealots and survive.
Tony @ Jan 13th 2008 10:30AM
Tell Apple to open a booth at CES or move Macworld to the Mandalay bay at the same time as CSE they have a ton of space there.
We don't have a Sony world or a Toshiba world ... Who do they think they are, A cult a religion Is Steve's ego so big he needs his own world and following? oh wait yes he does :)
Josh @ Jan 13th 2008 10:24AM
Last time I checked, Sony and Toshiba didn't have their own major computing platform upon which other companies created hardware, accessories, and software for.
Tony @ Jan 13th 2008 10:30AM
I don't know about that they have lots of products lets seen Blu-ray, PSP, Play stations 2 and 3. Cameras, Robots, mp3 players, phones, TV's, Sound systems, Memory cards, Desktops, laptops, Movie Studios, Webcams, home entertainment maybe they only thing they have that Apple has is an OS .. And I am sure all those add on from other company's already had a both at CES
Heres to SonyWorld next year :)
3rdsun @ Jan 13th 2008 10:57AM
Sony or Toshiba Microsoft have more product by themselves than Apple so I dont get your point. Apple are just rulers onto their own world, Macworld. I wont doubt Apple buying an island in the Pacific and call it Appleland or *gasp* iland. Where they can control world domination on their own turf. Steve Jobs = Jim Jones.
caleb @ Jan 13th 2008 10:57AM
Interesting. So what is Sony's market share for desktop computing? Surely it must be more than Apple's 7% then.
Chicksta @ Jan 13th 2008 11:25AM
I hate to break this to you, but Macworld Expo is produced and done by a publishing company, NOT by Apple. It just so happens that their flagship publication for this is... Macworld magazine. Apple didn't pick the name, Apple doesn't run the event - they just have booths like everyone else there, and someone from their company does the main keynote. WWDC is Apple's event.
So if there's a publisher that wants to make Sonyworld or Toshibaworld magazine and have a show, then there's your analogy. Yours is just wrong on so many levels of ignorance, it's amazing.
Tony @ Jan 13th 2008 11:25AM
Nothing to do with computing its a Macworld not MacComputing its products Sony has way more products than Apple thats a fact. All I am saying is why cant they just move there product showcase to CES like pretty much everyone else.
Macworld 2006 had 36,000 attendence with 347 exhibitors including Adobe, Microsoft, Quark, Nikon, Canon, FileMaker, Fujitsu and HP, among others. all who had a presence at CES. how many of that 36,000 where in Las Vegas for CES there 2,700 exhibitors with 1.8million square feet. there has to be room for another 347 :)
cashmonee @ Jan 13th 2008 11:34AM
Why would Apple do that? They already have the bigger show, not in size, but in importance. CES is a bunch of TVs and crapgadgets.
Here is an idea. How about moving CES closer to the holidays, shrinking it in size and maybe talk about products that will release within a year.
Tony @ Jan 13th 2008 12:38PM
Bigger in importance? you have to be joking? and only TV's and Crapgagets ? I don't think you have ever been to a CES show have you?
BEN! @ Jan 13th 2008 2:19PM
Build it and they will come.
Derek Martin @ Jan 13th 2008 10:34AM
who cares?
Darnell @ Jan 13th 2008 11:52AM
You, because you took the time to reply. And me, because I replied to you.
Dragod @ Jan 13th 2008 11:05AM
Or, you know, they could just suck it up and be apart of CES like everyone else.
Johan S @ Jan 13th 2008 11:22AM
In theory, this should be good .. it should force the CES exhibitors to come out with competitive well designed products.
Note, I said "in theory" and used the word "should" twice .. in the same sentence (liberte for emphasis).
3rdsun @ Jan 13th 2008 2:05PM
you are a dweeb. nuff said
xbit @ Jan 13th 2008 2:08PM
Maybe one day Apple will do the same...
Tony @ Jan 13th 2008 11:28AM
Then Chickstar why does Apple not show up at CES then? and its not ignorance its not fanboy i was just wondering why they need to have two shows at the same time? right now i am hating Sony because i bought a HD-dvd but thats all :) i still have other products :) don't get upset i don't want to hurt anyones feelings
Chicksta @ Jan 13th 2008 12:21PM
Well, that's not my name, but I'll assume you mean me...
You're still not getting the 'they' part. Who are you calling 'they'? Apple DOES NOT RUN MACWORLD EXPO. So it's not 'their' call as to when it is; it's a publishing company that manages it, and they book it every year in early January in SF. They're just two totally different types of events, like Photoshop World (put on by publishers, not Adobe) and MAX (put on by Adobe) or WWDC (put on by Apple). Macworld is not focused on gadgets per se, esp. past the keynote; they have training sessions on different tracks for creative professionals, which is NOT the same audience/objective as CES. Much of it is also about software; how would that fit into CES? Apple has no need to be at CES, because they don't need to promote their 'consumer electronic devices' the way that Sony or Toshiba do, and can use Macworld to do it instead. The part that stinks about the overlap is that us geeks that like Apple stuff and all the other fun toys/gadgets have to prepare our wallets and time accordingly :)
Ryan Block @ Jan 13th 2008 1:23PM
Steve determines (at least in part) when Macworld Expo is. There is no Macworld Expo in January without Steve and Apple, so they absolutely work on his schedule.
3rdsun @ Jan 13th 2008 2:12PM
With that said Ryan it seems Macworld wants to eclipse CES and it might open a can of ass whooping if its not careful
Alex Padilla @ Jan 13th 2008 11:32AM
well, this should be interesting
dpjax @ Jan 13th 2008 11:35AM
You dont count yourselves as media do you? The editing is too hideous.
Jason Lombard @ Jan 13th 2008 11:42AM
How bout this... who cares. If you want to go to CES, go. Macworld? Go. Both? Spend two days at each. Speak with your money. If you think Apple's playing dirty don't buy anything by them. But the fact of the matter is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Candle @ Jan 13th 2008 12:05PM
Lucky I have a twin. lol
resource @ Jan 13th 2008 1:57PM
CES blew ass this year.
Too much vaporware and shit that wont ever come out.
MacWorld is full of shit that you will see in a store. I say that as someone who never bought an Apple product.
But they dont push smoke.
lilo @ Jan 13th 2008 5:27PM
"Too much vaporware and shit that wont ever come out. MacWorld is full of shit that you will see in a store."
That is what MacHype makes you to believe. At MacWorld you'll see on average 2 new desktop models, 1 new laptop, 2 new gadget models and if you are lucky - one new type of device (once in 5 years) and yes.. - a lot of Steve :-) At CES, more stuff is announced every hour (only counting .models that you will see at stores).
iPriest @ Jan 13th 2008 2:04PM
Why don't they just cancel CES '09?
Silenthillnight @ Jan 13th 2008 2:28PM
There's no way they'd close CES. If the Chicago move is true, they'll be much bigger next year. As it stands now, it's too damn expensive to stay in Vegas and attend CES. 500-1000 a night for a room? No thanks, I'd rather blow all that on Chicago Pizza :)
