L.A. Live convention center / hotel includes gigantic, see-through outdoor screen
The 54-story tower planned to house The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Los Angeles and JW Marriott when it opens in 2010 will also include an 8,000 sq ft screen on its eastern face, without disrupting the view of guests inside. The result of a deal between property owners AEG and sponsor Panasonic, the 50-foot by 160-foot screen will live in the neighborhood of the new Yankee Stadium and the Dallas Cowboys new home. No word on the exact res, but there will no doubt be plenty of HD as the entire complex, including Staples Center and Nokia Theatre, is getting Panasonic screens installed as part of the deal. Our reservations are already in, check after the break for an illustration of the future layout.

I'll take two. One for the bedroom and one for the bathroom.
Are they taking pre-orders now?

I don't understand the second sentence:
"The result of a deal between property owners AEG and sponsor Panasonic, the 50-foot by 160-foot screen will live in the neighborhood of the new Yankee Stadium and the Dallas Cowboys new home."
What does LA have to do with the new Yankee and Cowboy stadiums other than the screens? They are thousands of miles apart the last time I looked.
Numus @ Jan 9th 2009 8:52AM
I was thinking the SAME EXACT THING... Not only that Calfornia, New York, and Texas arent even in the same time zones.. i guess they ment in the neighborhood of the screens being installed near those new stadiums
loadstar @ Jan 9th 2009 9:00AM
It's badly worded, but all they meant was that the screens being installed here will be similar in size and resolution to those being installed into the new Yankee Stadium and Dallas Cowboys stadiums.
bandigolo @ Jan 9th 2009 12:12PM
jeez, don't you guys stay updated on ridiculously pretentious sporting facility expenditures?
Numus @ Jan 9th 2009 8:53AM
Are these projected or some new technology?
Xidius @ Jan 9th 2009 11:29AM
OH MY GOD A BOMB!!!
The president of Panasonic should probably resign for this!
Hackettman @ Jan 9th 2009 9:39AM
Its odd how you see an article about job cuts and then giant lavish screens........ Someones making money......
Patrick @ Jan 9th 2009 9:59AM
Agreed. How much does a decent copy editor go for nowadays? Hell, how much does it cost for a mediocre copy editor?
Patrick @ Jan 9th 2009 10:00AM
That comment was supposed to go under Rick's. Lousy comments system...

It's likely a fairly low resolution display, we have a building like this in Dallas and I understand there are quite a few of them around the world, particularly in China. They embed LED strips between the windows but it's a balance between getting them close enough for higher resolution and the ability to view the display at closer distances by getting the strips close together, i.e. small windows or farther apart resulting in a lower resolution display but larger windows, something I imagine would be desired at the Ritz-Carlton. At a distance even though the led strips might be over a foot apart they appear close enough together to form a low resolution video display.
I can see the building in Dallas from my condo, at a mile away you can read text displayed on it pretty easily and decipher video but it is pretty low resolution.
gutier @ Jan 9th 2009 12:34PM
Wow! I live in Dallas and have not seen technology like that... Victory Park maybe?

and i supposed this thing is waterproof?

I noted this on the EngagdetHD story, but apparently it didn't get picked up here:
To give some context to that top photo (which I took), the screen will be roughly seven window panels wide inside that inset area (a little over half of what's pictured) and will face in toward Nokia Plaza and Figueroa street. The rendering shows the opposite side of the tower.
There's an existing low-density LED strip on a different building on site, and AEG told me that this new display would be far higher resolution than that one.

Yeah, the other site is AT LA Live, and it's facing Nokia Plaza. I see it everyday as I walk into work. I've seen it at night and it looks really nice.

So, yet another distraction for drivers heading west on the 10.
Those LED billboards are bad enough. This will be super distracting!
