OLED Association and Samsung show flexible screen

The OLED Association and Samsung gifted us with a quick view of a foldable OLED display attached to a giant and very make believe Samsung phone. We saw the same back in November, but this time we got up close and filmed it ourselves. We're sure this mockup in no way reflects any future handset design from Samsung, but it lets us dream of a day with giant foldable displays, and those will be great days. Follow on for a vid of it folding and unfolding and a mini gallery, too.

We need folding OLEDs in everything.
OneLove @ Jan 9th 2009 12:00PM
Bonus: After folding and opening it ten times, you end up with 2 phones!!!
Nick @ Jan 9th 2009 5:21AM
Make that OLED screen multi-touch and they are on to a winner!! LOL
Ellianth @ Jan 9th 2009 9:19AM
why, so you can pinch to resize?
Matthew C @ Jan 9th 2009 7:45PM
multitouch OLED folding 10" pannel - open it up and you get like a 16" slate tablet pc!
Ray @ Jan 9th 2009 5:24AM
Nintendo SS (Single Screen) confirmed. Now if only the whole thing was multi-touch...
Sean @ Jan 9th 2009 6:16AM
But you can see the fold when it is open. That would drive me nuts, a great big crease down the middle of my screen.
Spawn Xe @ Jan 10th 2009 6:21AM
me too, i think rollable screens are the only ones that make sense.
Twitchy @ Jan 9th 2009 6:33AM
I was about to say the same thing - wouldn't it be better to roll than to fold?
Levi @ Jan 9th 2009 10:06AM
It would drive me nuts too. Just like that one little tiny piece of dust in my PSP screen...
loosely_coupled @ Jan 9th 2009 6:12PM
I'm sure that will be resolved by the time it's ready for production..
Swambu @ Jan 9th 2009 6:39AM
Probably it's just 2 seperate screens with a fancy processor who makes them look like 1 (and some quality engineering to put the oleds on the edge :d)
foldable my arse
Arkenklo @ Jan 9th 2009 6:53AM
Or it's a foldable OLED.
Plothole @ Jan 9th 2009 7:09AM
Flexible OLEDs are a reality... at least in the lab.
loosely_coupled @ Jan 9th 2009 6:19PM
It is not that difficult (relatively) to make a prototype folding OLED.. the real engineering challenges will be
1) Increasing the durability and life-time of the OLED material
2) Creating cost-effective mass production with decent yields
3) Integrating a flexible capacitive touch layer
4) Implementing them into very small, thin end-user devices
Ian @ Jan 13th 2009 10:53AM
Swambu, are you really that dumb?
SUN @ Jan 11th 2009 2:22AM
wow,i heard sth about OLED,and such an broad screen use attached to a foldable function is really swell.longing for one free,ha-ha.
david @ Jan 9th 2009 7:19AM
A rolling design would be ideal. I seem to remember seeing a parchment holder that rolled up inside a tube. Go with me here for a second. Pulling out a flexible screen on a device to watch a movie perhaps, or on a device to display plans. Better yet......eliminating the projector in classrooms. Just pull the screen down. There is a definite market for this. We just have to figure out a way to make it cost effective for the real world.
Chris @ Jan 9th 2009 7:44AM
idiots ... its a foldable/rollabale oled, they exist they've been shown a thousand times so why would they fake it?
the fact of the crease is because its FOLDED, just as when you fold paper which is basically what oleds are like, they get a crease an oled map would have creases as well if you folded it up....
the fact is they should have had it be a phone in a tube that you pull a tab out thats the screen that unrolls from inside and then winds back up inside.
kesherz @ Jan 9th 2009 8:32AM
Now they just need to invent the Global from Earth: Final Conflict and I'll jump for joy.

roach @ Jan 9th 2009 10:30AM
Wow... if this had been an Apple creation, fanbois would had been all over this.
Mark Perrin @ Jan 9th 2009 10:44AM
If that had been an apple creation, there wouldn't have been a crease.
Adam Urbanski @ Jan 9th 2009 11:59AM
If Chuck Norris designed it, it wouldn't need to be OLED. It would be a foldable PLASMA.
Beamey @ Jan 9th 2009 5:33PM
If Chuck Norris designed it it wold be edible
Only a Passerby @ Jan 9th 2009 11:47AM
Uh, dear samsung folks, when demonstrating a foldable screen picking an image that looks like a cracked lcd is not really the best choice..
Miki @ Jan 9th 2009 6:45PM
I'm waiting for the version that has the words DON'T PANIC printed in large friendly letters on its cover...
