Aiptek PocketCinema V10 hands-on

This is it! We just received video of the only pico projector endorsed by Russell Crowe (if by "endorsed" you mean "absolutely not endorsed," and by "Russell Crowe" you mean "the poor target of our Photoshoppery"). For a handheld VGA projector, the thing seems to handle itself pretty well. It's small and simple to use, but then again it doesn't really seem all that bright (something you might notice if you ever need it to, we don't know, "project" something). This bad boy has 1GB internal memory, an SD slot, and miniUSB, which should handle most of your I/O needs. Be sure to check out the explosive videos -- generously provided by Engadget Spanish -- after the break.

i think they are super cool its just i have no real use for one yet.
Magnulus @ Jan 14th 2009 10:54AM
If only the iPhone/ Touchypod could output video while playing games, I'd be right on it.

Magnulus, Sony's PSP can do that (then again, the PSP does a plethora of things Apple's trendy wares can't).
Verythrax @ Jan 14th 2009 10:09AM
What's the refresh rate, resolution, and I can use it continually without stressing the device?
I would love to play games project on the wall.

I agree with PuBeLeSs. I really wish i needed one!

I reviewed this on Fox13 here in Utah:

It's a fun little projector but almost impossible to use unless the room is SUPER dark. It projects beyond 50" with easy. I spent a good hour playing some Wii on it. It has a built-in battery that runs a good 2 or 3 hours. I've used it reliably for a few hours without any issues. It got hot but didn't seem to effect performance.
Verythrax @ Jan 14th 2009 10:31AM
Thatnks, but 640x480 is not enough for me. Make it a little bit more high res and bright and I'm sold.
Kirk Yuhnke @ Jan 14th 2009 10:49AM
640x480 is a factor for sure! It looks good but it does look like 640x480. Aiptek says the 10 lumens brightness is something they're working on for the next model. I'm not sure if they're looking to up the resolution or not.

Jose is cool, but I was hoping that Drita was doing the video :(
Magnulus @ Jan 14th 2009 10:55AM
Fun fact: "Drita" is Norwegian slang for "piss drunk".
Jose Andrade @ Jan 14th 2009 11:13AM
Oh! Come on!... you can't expect Drita on all of our videos! ;)
Cellien @ Jan 14th 2009 11:08AM
I hope they make an HD version that I can plug my Aiptek GO-HD in to! (As well as hook up game consoles!)
yuppicide @ Jan 14th 2009 2:06PM
If they can make it work better in light situations and up the brightness I am sold. My friend wants something he can use at
weddings to display photos on a wall.. as he shoots pictures I would edit them and put the good ones in the projector.
yuppicide @ Jan 14th 2009 2:06PM
I mean to say up the resolution.
paul-engadget @ Jan 14th 2009 3:12PM
agree they're cool, but of little use on a day-to-day basis.. e.g. where would you use on a train, in the airport?
I think that a tidy and discrete HMD with at least 720p (wireless hdmi/dvi?) would be my ideal mobile display - wouldn't need the bulk of a laptop, just build that nvidia unit into a small-ish keyboard!
slamEVIL @ Jan 18th 2009 11:03PM
if they make a brighter version buy the time a NE touch hd (or the at&t topaz) arrives, i'm all over it!
brickwood @ Jan 14th 2009 9:24PM
haha.. we've been selling these here in Australia for months now.. though selling isn't quite the right word, considering the dust these things build sitting on the shelf.

We also made a review for this back in November:
http://metku.net/index.html?path=reviews/aiptek-pocketcinema-v10/index_eng
"Would I buy one myself? Perhaps not. It is nice to play with V10 and people around you will surely notice you and the projector but for me this is not enough. But with current price of around 300 euros (380 dollars) here in Finland, there will be a market for these."
or maybe not... :)
