It's not like we haven't seen MP3-playing headphones before -- heck, we've even seen 'em from SkullCandy itself -- but the latest pair from the aforementioned firm simplifies things quite a bit. Quietly showcased at CES, the Double Agent cans sport a built-in SD slot and the typical assortment of controls on one earcup in order to take the external DAP / PMP out of the equation entirely. 'Course, we wouldn't recommend this to those who aren't fond of just shuffling through their tracks, but if you're aiming to consolidate, you can get one step closer to doing just that when this ships in March / April for a currently undisclosed price.

[Via Gadgetell]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Here we go again: CES and Macworld to overlap in 2009

Filed under: CES, Misc. Oh dear lord, we aren't even through this year's CES / Macworld one-two punch and we just happened upon some distressing news for the 200,000+ tech trade show-goers and media that attend both: they're overlapping in 2009. AGAIN. Granted, things appear to be a little different this time around -- Steve and the Cupertino crew will be firing the first shots on Tuesday, January 6th, with Macworld continuing through Friday the 9th, while CES opens up on Thursday, the 8th, and wraps up Sunday, the 11th. But didn't Jobs and Shapiro say this thing would never happen again? Actually, come to think of it, no -- they merely "agreed it would be nice if they didn't overlap." Yeah, it would really would be nice, guys, you should try making it happen more than once every couple of years.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

You decide '08: The best of Crapgadget at CES

Filed under: CES, Features, Misc. Tucked below all the self-congratulation, however, is what looks to be an as yet unannounced prototype from the ever-active iriver designers. The product appears to be an e-book of sorts, but with handwriting recognition and potentially a color display. Obviously, there's no more info at the moment to go on, iriver has been feeling a little protype-ish of late, and we never got much of a product out of iriver's last e-book, but hopefully we'll be hearing more about this one soon.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Transystem's i-Tracker keeps tabs on whatever you'd like

Ah, the wonderful world of personal GPS trackers. Upon gazing at the i-Tracker, visions of Cheaters arise in our minds, but we'll try to keep the nostalgia at a minimum here. Transystem's latest -- which was proudly displayed at CES -- reportedly houses both a GPS and GSM module which enables it to transmit tracking information to one's PC or mobile in real-time. As expected, it can be controlled with a predetermined handset or internet-connected PC, and there's even an SOS button that instantly beams out one's current location. Mum's the word on pricing / availability, but make sure you clear that history after scouring the net in search of one.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Gear and loathing in Las Vegas - Engadget has left the building

Hard to believe, but the 150,000 some-odd people that flooded into Vegas for CES have all gone home -- including your Engadget editors. Sure, it wasn't the most exciting CES in recent memory, but it wasn't without merit, either. Why, just think of the eight thousand HDTVs announced, blockbuster format war news, or iriver's unexpectedly show-stealing lineup. One thing's certainly for sure: you demanded we give wall-to-wall coverage of CES, and we'd like to hope we did you right. See you at CES 2009 -- and every day in between!

Gallery: Gear and loathing in Las Vegas - Engadget has left the building

Continue reading Gear and loathing in Las Vegas - Engadget has left the building

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Keepin' it real fake, CES edition: Sony's NW-A800 has a secret admirer

Sony's been certainly making strides in its DAP lineup this year, and this here is just further proof of its success: a cheap knockoff version of the NW-A800. We've got nothing in the way of specs, other than the "Digital MP4 Player" title, which we're guessing means exactly what it says. Look how convenient that record button is, folks! Another shot (which we spotted at an entirely different distributor) is after the break.
Continue reading Keepin' it real fake, CES edition: Sony's NW-A800 has a secret admirer

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Crapgadget CES finale, round 18: Tole Pure really is a crapgadget

This little bugger isn't much larger than a traditional pager (remember those?) and can reportedly capture video at 640 x 480 (30 frames-per-second), and while we're not told how much internal capacity is housed, it can store some four hours of content before needing to be emptied. As expected, the rechargeable battery also provides around four hours of usage, and it's not scared to get thrown around / wet either. 'Course, this gem wasn't designed for the casual lifeblogger, as the vanilla model will run you some $500 while the "encrypted police version" goes for two bills more.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Crapgadget CES edition, round 16: Music Player Sunglasses

The primary focus of the handheld is supposedly 32 bit gaming, but sadly SNES is nowhere to be found. But lucky for us there's Game Boy Advance play, in addition to Game Boy, Game Boy Color and NES. The 3-inch screen should show off that emulated Advance Wars just nicely, and the addition of a 1.3 megapixel camera and support for plenty of audio and video formats round out the piece nicely. You can also add memory with miniSD and play your ROMs on the big screen with video out. No word on price or availability.

Gallery: PMP51 "MP4 MP3 super game" does it all

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Crapgadget CES edition, round 14: Hello Kitty with human debris

Sure, it's been out for a little while, but considering how many Engadget editors play guitar (and the fact that Pete just started RCRD LBL), we figured we had to stop by Gibson's booth-bus complex and give the Robot Guitar a shot. The self-tuning axe actually weighs a little less than a regular Les Paul, even though it has gigantic motorized tuners and all that extra circuitry. To activate the system, you pull out a special tone knob and select one of the eight or so presets, and then simply strum until the lights flash blue three times. It's really fast, and undeniably cool, but for nine hundred extra bucks, we'll stick with our trusty TU-12. Video's after the break -- and make sure to check out the gallery for a shot of the weirdest thing we've seen in a while: eight dudes all plugged into Line6 Pods and headphones, rocking out quietly in a circle.

Gallery: Hands-on with Gibson's Robot Guitar

Continue reading Video: Hands-on with Gibson's Robot Guitar

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

The swappable GSM radio

While wandering around the "International" wing of this year's CES, we stumbled upon a number of questionable (and familiar) items. One line of products that stood out, however, was a company offering a modular solution for adding GSM capability to a wide variety of devices. Using what appears to be a proprietary type of connector, the SIM-ready card can imbue an assortment of gadgets (phone, e-book reader, GPS... teddy bear) with GSM functionality. It's unclear whether this technology is being deployed overseas (or at all), and whether or not we'll see it Stateside (doubtful), but it does take a novel approach to cell-ing up your gear.

Gallery: The swappable GSM radio

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Hands-on with the Amtek U560 / Aigo UMPC

We got a chance to fondle the non-Menlow Amtek U560 / Aigo UMPC on the floor of this year's CES, and we've got the pictures to prove it. The XP-running portable had a solid build, though the mechanism for sliding the screen felt a bit janky, and the overall size is possibly more than you want, especially with all the Menlow hotness coming our way this year. Perhaps a gallery of photos might help? Yeah, we thought so.

Gallery: Hands-on with the Amtek U560 / Aigo UMPC

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Crapgadget CES edition, round 13: e-paper display actually paper

Besides having one of, if not, the best product showings at CES 2008, iriver also had one of the most high-tech booths. Gone were the booth babes and ignorant product hacks -- replaced instead by virgin-white cases and interactive displays which allowed their products to speak for themselves. Fortunately, we also had the chance to confirm one of the most peculiar icon choices in CE history: the raised-dog icon on their S7... yes, he's really treating the booth like his own personal fire hydrant. See a video tour of the booth after the break.

Gallery: iriver booth tour

Continue reading Video: iriver's wee CES 2008 booth tour

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

Hands-off with the Chevy Volt hydrogen concept powertrain

GM spliced and diced a Chevy Volt hydrogen prototype and put it up for the world to see at this year's 2008 CES. Rocking GM's fifth generation fuel cell stack en-lieu of a regular gasoline engine, we wouldn't hold our breath seeing this before the electric version drops in 2010. Toshiba's Cell processor-based SpursEngine B.E. was on full display at CES, with a variety of tech demos to show off its power. We managed to wrangle a chat out of some of the company's product designers and marketing people, and they explained their hesitation at continuing to show the W7-cum-GSM-phone due to the similarities of the phones UI to an all-too-familiar device. According to the iriver people, the iPhone-like interface which was showcased originally was only meant to demonstrate what the phone was capable of, not a finalized version of the OS. Of course, it's little consolation to us, having seen a brief snippet of the phone, though we're assured that some new hotness -- or hot newness -- is on the way from the cats in Korea.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Crapgadget CES edition, round 10: PC Desktop Duo

Features include: typing, clicking. We've got the elevator speech from iriver on what the Unit 2 is and how it works. Hitting the US in early 2009 for about $700. No matter where we go, RIM seems to have this same booth style where all the good stuff (the phones, that is) are stuffed in a central nucleus, causing massive crowding. Don't get us wrong, it's entirely possible that's the effect RIM is shooting for, but heaven help us poor journalists try to get a shot of the goods contained within. The Canadian manufacturer didn't have any earth-shattering announcements for the show -- just a couple of new 8130 colors -- so the highlight has to be the giant Pearl that was harassing passers-by. We spotted these guys hiding out in a teensy booth at CeBIT back in 2006, but EDS Lab has resurfaced with its WiDRIVE line -- and it's just getting better. The WiFi drive enclosures now come in 1.8-inch (PX-100) and 2.5-inch (DX-225) versions, but now also support a BitTorrent client, RSS podcast subscriptions and a built-in web server. You can connect to the drive using a number of networking standards, including DHCP, WebDav UPnP and Bonjour, but if 802.11b/g speeds aren't good enough for you, you're out of luck: the USB port is for charging only.

Gallery: New WiDRIVE line includes 2.5-inch support, BitTorrent

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Crapgadget CES edition, round 8: Firetruck with 1.5-inch digital photo frame

Runco and expensive tend to go hand in hand, so we'd expect nothing less than a five-figure price tag accompanying the firm's new Video Xtreme VX-22i. This 1080p monster features a three-chip DLP design, O-Path technology, CinOptx premium grade lenses, Vivix II video processing, a 4,000:1 contrast ratio, 2,850 ANSI lumens and comes calibrated to ISF standards. As expected, users with a completely stuffed bank account can opt for the CineWide with Autoscope edition ($54,995), but even those who go without the aforementioned option will be forking out $39,995 for the vanilla model. If you've managed to get over the shock, you can place your order now (or pick up a totally more useful BMW / college education / etc.) and expect it to arrive lickety split.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Mustek's CES 2008 'booth tour'

We'll be honest, Mustek -- you're not exactly giving us a lot to work with. First you don't release any PR on your new products, then when we get to the booth, you seem unsure if you've even got new products. Of course, we did manage to find your suspiciously-Sharp-ish Blu-ray player, a new widgetified photo frame, and that lovely iPod dock. Check out our "tour" and see for yourself.

Gallery: Mustek's CES 2008 'booth tour'

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Engadget Podcast 112 - 01.10.2008

Filed under: CES, Features, HDTV, Podcasts

This CES: all about the HDTVs. On this CES 2008 episode of the podcast we're talking TV with Engadget HD editor Ben Drawbaugh -- as well as a bit about Lenovo's grand new consumer computing brand plan. We also caught up with our pal Charles over at Virgin America, who talked with us a bit about the airlines nascent plans to get you online during your next flight.

Get the podcast
[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (enhanced AAC).
[RSS MP3] Add the Engadget Podcast feed (in MP3) to your RSS aggregator and have the show delivered automatically.
[RSS AAC] Add the Engadget Podcast feed (in enhanced AAC) to your RSS aggregator.
[RSS OGG] Add the Engadget Podcast feed (in OGG) to your RSS aggregator.
[Zune]Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace

Hosts: Peter Rojas and Ryan Block
Guests: Ben Drawbaugh (Engadget HD), Charles Ogilvie (Virgin America)
Producer: Trent Wolbe
Music: Solvent - Instructograph (Ghostly International)

05:04 - Mitsubishi laser TV unveiled
13:35 - Sony XEL-1 OLED slips into US stores
19:51 - OpenCable officially becomes tru2way
31:20 - Lenovo launches IdeaPad, IdeaStation laptop and desktop lines
39:24 - AirCell set to hook up Virgin America with in-flight broadband

LISTEN (MP3)
LISTEN (AAC)
LISTEN (OGG)

Contact the podcast: 1-888-ENGADGET, Engadget (Gizmo Project) or podcast at engadget dawt com

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Trent Wolbe

<itunes:subtitle>Engadget Podcast 112</itunes:subtitle><itunes:author>Peter Rojas, Ryan Block</itunes:author><itunes:duration>0:46:36</itunes:duration><itunes:keywords>podcasts</itunes:keywords>

CES 2008 ultimate swag bag giveaway: like a Xmas stocking in January

Filed under: CES, Misc. As you're probably well aware, CES is ground zero for free stuff -- most of which is crappy swag. But there's some good stuff to be had as well, and this year we're proud to present you with the ultimate CES swag bag. Literally bursting at the seams, this bag contains every single free item we've collected throughout the entire show. All in all over 100 items stuffed inside a courtesy HD DVD press backpack (which itself may be a collector's item some day soon), including a Jawbone Bluetooth headset, CoPilot Navigator 9, Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray disc, Tooth Tunes toothbrush, and an iriver Mplayer.

All you have to do to throw your hat into the ring is to leave a comment in this post listing your favorite new product introduced in the past few days. Since we want to ship this thing out before we take off tomorrow, entires for this contest will be closed at exactly 12:00PM PT (noon, Pacific) on Friday, January 11th. Make sure you read all the points below before entering, 'cause we'd hate to disqualify anyone from winning this one-of-a-kind CES 2008 souvenir.

Leave a comment below. Tell us your favorite new CES gadget.

You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)

If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you'll be fine.

Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don't make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.

Winner will be chosen randomly. That winner will get a bag full of stuff whose value is impossible to determine, but which we doubt is more than $300.

Entries can be submitted until Friday, January 11th, 12:00PM PT. Good luck!

Full rules can be found here.
