Give them an inch: Matsushita ups the ante with 103-inch plasma
The sign in Samsung's booth at CES may still boast that the company has the "world's first" 102-inch plasma TV, but rivals Matsushita Electric Industrial (AKA Panasonic) have added a whopping inch to their biggest display, giving them (for now at least) the title of world's largest plasma. Unveiled at CES, the prototype display has a 1920x1080 resolution and a 3,000:1 contrast ratio. And now that they've been beaten, we hear that Samsung is going to leave that 102-incher out with the trash when they vacate CES this weekend.

Tss... serves Samsung right.
I know I'd throw my 102-inch plasma TV out straight away upon hearing this.
I love panasonic!
Where's the Samsung trash bin???
I prefer the 102 inch model; A hundred and three inches is a bit too much.
But is it 1080p?
Well, If they're just going to throw it out, I'll run over there and take it off their hands for them. Just trying to help.
What a vulgar Display..... of wealth. Where do I get mine? Truly the angry inch.
quality, not quantity here folks...so i will stick to Pioneer's amazing Purevision 61 inch Pro1410 any day.
Sorry folks. Old Technology. Toshiba unveiled their SED Technology at CES http://gear.ign.com/articles/679/679235p1.html promising contrast ratios of 100,000:1!!!
Great How Much And Where Do I Get One or Two?
Well sometimes one more inch could come in handy.
i cant even afford a 30" flat screen.... ungreatful arnt we..
like the ladies say every inch counts hahahahahahahaha were can i get on to
!03 inches? BFD, With all the crap on TV why in the world would you spend the money on this. It's the same shit on 103 inches as it is on a 27 inch TV. I figure I'll take the 3 + grand they wnat for the 103 inch TV and have some fun wioth it.
yes, the story fails to advertise a price. i'd like to build a small house out of these suckers.
More than an eye full is a waste anyway
You mean my 102 inch is old news already? Alright, where do I find the 103 inch?? And what's the price tag??
102 or 103 inch what's the difference until they can be produced at a reasonable price that everyone can afford they are useless.
If your going to buy Japanese, might as well stick with the best, SONY!!
oooo, wow, 103 inches. thats a big feat, they beat the old record by an inch, id say its worth it to buy it. ive got the 102 inch and now that i know about the 103 incher, this 102 inch just seems like a surveillence tv! haha, not, waste of time. i could watch the same crap thats on tv on a 35 inch. eh? good job idiots....
I agree with F LUDU (#13). Why would one want to see more of the same "old crap", larger than "life"
SONY XBR 60 DOES ME JUST FINE....NOW I JUST HAVE TO EXPLAIN TO MY SON WHY HE HAS TO PAY FOR HIS FIRST 2 YEARS OF SCHOOL HIMSELF.....HA HA
Great for my baywatch collection!
Hmm.. so when are the going "Big Screen" with these? I mean in theaters?
I got your 103"...hangin
gotta love david haselhoff haha. I bet with that 103 inch tv you can count all the hairs on his chest. Thats just hot..lol jk.
103" wow!! I have plasma envy!
I'm glad panasonic came out with something bigger and better than the hi tech sony lets them know they can also achieve, love the idea because I love panasonic but wish I can afford it keep up the good work right own. Panasonic.
Toshiba wants to come out bigger, they better fix their problems on their existing lines, they suck...
I guess size does matter!
I can just see those discarded 102 inchers on my sidewalk...huck
103" has nothing on me ( Dirk )
GOLLY! How exciting! If I had one for each wall in my apartment, I could really get immersed in tv programs!!!
In this case "Bigger is Better" I want one...
Is it worth the extravagant price?
It's funny everyone wows over this marvel. but let's break this down. contrast ratio: By whos standards have they been measured to? An outside party or each manufacturers own reference points. In the industry today there needs to be a standard reference to which this is measured. Size is cool but resolution is what matters. The larger the screen the higher the resolution needs to be. Lets compare apples to apples and see who really wins? What is really funny, in a few years LCD's with DLP technology will be advanced enought to surpass the plasma TV. Then we will be seeing who will make the largest LCD haha
Once again...they make something for the rich. Show me these types of accomplishments when the make it affordable for the average middle class citizen. Other wise it's just hype. Or maybe they should drop their price a grand on old models every inch they gain...now wouldn't that be some shit
im happy with my 27' no name brand tv for everyone buys this they should reconsider and help me pay for my wedding 103' is overrated anyways
103 inches, yeah that's really usefull! It'll come in handy when I want to see a life size image of "feed the children" starving kids in Africa.Hey I know, why don't the egomaniacs at panasonic put their brain power to more humanitarian efforts, all 103 inches of it!
Hey Doug, Ur in denial, size does matter, ask any woman. No one verbalizes it but everyone's thinking it....I'm just imagining what porn must look like on this thing!!
If I don't like the crap that's on now, why would I want it bigger? Why would I decorate my home with a huge TV. Bigger ISN'T ALWAYS better!
My 102-inch plasma is just a sick joke. I'm not gonna be able to show my face around town with out the latest 103- inch *rolls eyes*
Would be more beneficial if they put more time and thought into how they can better satisfy the customers wants and needs rather than trying to out due the competition by 1 inch...lol
Yes, 103 inches is quite an achievement for a Plasma, but this is not this best to be put out to the public by far. I have a relative that works for Panasonic, he worked on the designs for this technology. He said they did this to try and outbeat Toshiba's new SED displays. With a promising 100,000:1 ratio, but they have not set a release date. SED is alot more powerful then Plasma or LCD. It never overheats, a .000056 reaction time at about 100-103 frames per-second. Plasma and LCD well be put to shame very soon...
(Check out more info. on the SED at http://gear.ign.com/articles/679/679235p1.htmlYes, 103 inches is quite an achievement for a Plasma, but this is not this best to be put out to the public by far. Hey F ludu check your spelling next time, you look like an IDIOT.(wnat)want-(wioth)with.
Eh, next they will come out with a 104" yeah thats neat who cares unless your rich. Mise well put a theater in your house if your gonna buy something so big. Add a popcorn machine while your at it. Invite Puff Daddy and Tom cruise and Watch your self on MTV. Maybe watch the Paris Hilton sex tape.lol.
I find it funny that some of you have plasma envy! Why dont you ask your wife is she happy with her big tv! LOL Dont be a hater... Good for those that can afford it.
as for as t.v's go its a nice one as all them or. but many of us can't even afford a 20 inch not because we choose not to but hey maybe if bush give better help to his own country maybe even the Wages would go up to help the less fortunate. but like i say great t.v for a size as for as any of them Money talk's Bull shit walks. since i am not wealth .Rather pay my bills
If I want to see something that big or bigger ... I just go to the movies. Being a college student one does not have money to waste on 103 inch anyting.
Why make something that 80% of us can't afford? I am happy with my 32 inch flat screen. If ONLY they can make a Plasma for under $1000 I would snatch one up. The world needs more important problems solved than who has the biggest TV. Grow up and think about the consumer and what is logical. An extra inch??? Wow! If the 102" is being thrown away just send it to me so I can sell it and pay off some bills!!
I Could only imagine how much this thing cost. Can anyone afford it?
I bet that extra inch will cost you.
sorry sherwin williams... this new tv is going to reduce your wall paint sells...
I just recently bought mine, and have had nightmares ever since. I couldn't wait to watch my first porn on it, and I have been haunted by a man eating vagina since that night. I once even had self esteem, but after seeing my first 97" penis that was 4 feet in diameter shooting out a kiddie pool of sperm, my life is now ruined, I am afraid to go out in public for fear that I might drown or be eaten. Everyone please protect yourself from this beast, it has ruined one of my favorite recreational activities. Bigger is not always better
I'm already waiting for the 104 incher to come out!!!!!!
What size is the remote?
anyone who cares about spelling on a blog is a nerd but i have a great 26 inch lcd that was $650 and that is enough for me-anything over 60 inches is stupid
I have a 73 inch wide screen Mitsubishi projection television and I'm just fine with that. Besides I have three children running around. I'll wait for the bigger plasma when they are not around to destroy it for me!!!!
LIFE SIZE PORN. COOOLLLLL........
I hope Samsung and Panasonic read these posts! You all are hilarious! I enjoyed them all..especially Eugene and Fix. Love it!
$70,000 for a screen that can't take the scroll under the news cast. and as far as I know plasma tv's don't last long oh yeah I'm going to mortgage the house sorry kids no college for you
I seen in one comment that they wil stick with there 27" TV and save the 3000 dollars for the 103" TV try again Tv cost approx $36,000.00 and needs a minimin veiwing area of at least 28 feet from the screen
ok i want one figure i got the 72" and now a bigger one is out a better tv is worth it even if you only spend an hour a night (like i do) watching it its only money you cant take it with you when you die
LIFE IS LIKE A BOX OF....LITTLE BROWN STUFF! MAYBE Y'ALL GO FIGHT EACH OTHER AND I'LL KEEP YOUR WOMEN HAPPY. WE'LL MAKE A VIDEO JUST SO YOU CAN SEE HOW CLEAR EVERY DETAIL IS. HA HA HA HA HA HA!!
wow i really feel outdated i have a 72" tv but it is the old kind, you know 3'deep. big and bulky and a bitch to move because the wheels collapsed under its weight. but i will stick with that. 3 more years and a 300" screen will not only be affordable bit you will be the biggest loser in town if you dont have one, like those who dont have a dvd player now. (i work with 2 people who dont have one lmfao)
I find it interesting that TV's are getting bigger and bigger as time permits. Why havent they developed an implant that will allow the user to live in the TV program? Plasma schmasma, isnt the life of a plasma screen on a limited time anyway? I must admitt there is some space issues with it, as well as some great benifits. Those facial closeups that will allow you to count nose hairs and blemishes at an instant.......
And the rich continue to get richer due to the way the middle class consumer gets taken in by new gadgets!!!
I'd be happy to have any tv in that size. Don't plasma sets have a limited life? They're still expensive in smaller sizes, let-alone 103 inches. That kind of money spent should also have at lease an extented warranty for at lease 5 years. Some stores won't offer more than a 3 year plan because it's plasma.
OK- considering you have a 103", that means you need to be "how far back" to watch this monster so your eyes won't cross? Who has a living room "THAT" big? oh wait, yes, this would be for the upper class income that could afford the 5000+ sq foot whatever to put it in. Just give me quality. An affordable crisp, clear resolution for the middle class folks that keep this country running. Ah... it would be nice.
Shit! What would happen if it got burn-in? Or if it was at a high alitude? Anyone know what kind of screen is that at Turner Field?
The only 1" difference I really care about is from 6 to 7", or 7 to 8" :-)
Thanks for giving us something to save for$$$$$$$$$$
I just hope by the time I save enough $$$$$$$$$ there will not be a 104 inches.
please inform samsung that I would gladly take the 102 inch tv if they're going to leave it behind, Please.
will it fit on top of the old curtis mathis floor model in my trailer
No matter how big it is ,and with over 150 channels on satelite there is still nothing worth watching.
If you sit really close....and you squint a little...
The 102" is reported to cost over $200,000.00 ... I cant see having my set cost more than my house. Is there a price drop with the 103"? I think I will stay with keeping my chair closer to the tv, if the screen gets too big then I will need a bigger room. There is a rule for distance away to screen size .... something like 1 foot to every 3 inches .... so I think I need a 35' room now.
How about feed the starving, help others, what in the blue hell might you need a 103 inch tv for.
Who would be dumb enough to spend that much money on a tv. If people that can afford this shit would simply give that money, or a portion of it, to a charity, what a wonderful world it would be. How many children could be fed with $36,ooo? HMMM? Quite a few!!!! Hell, I can't even afford a small flat screen. Must be nice to have that much $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Has anyone ever read the book Fahrenheit 451? If not, I recommend it, it really gives you something to think about, especially after hearing this about a 103 inch tv, do we honestly need that? To me, it seems like the book is slowly starting to come true; most people don't read much, because they don't like to have to think, and tv is starting to take over our lives, in the book people make rooms where every wall is a giant tv, so it's like they are living what they are watching. It's scary to see that this is starting to happen. Why do we need a 103 inch tv when you see the exact same thing on a 30 inch, even a 20 inch? The only reason people want one is so they can brag to their friends and show off. I really recommend that everyone read the book Fahrenheit 451 though, so you can see what is slowly happening to our society.
SIZE DOES MATTER
Please, don't let my husband see that TV.
103 inch never knew this was out there. only one thing you forgot at what gaurentee and why not 15 or 20 year
warrentee. you people are somthing bigger is better ? but
for how much ? i cant even see above my head with all the other great bills taxes and fuel yeah great news for maybe the people who dont care about bills who live with there mom and dads or just plan rich people..
Yeah but plasmas have a really short life span - usually about 4-5 years. I would forgo the extra inch for an extra life year!
103 inches of plasma is a lot of gas.
heeeey guys....just remember, that for the ladies.... 1 inch is the diff. between ewwww and "AHHHHHHHHH"...lol This TV...remindes me a hooker, that used to charge by the inch...ohhh...poor ..panasonic, after making this one...they couldn't afford the hooker...lmao.... What a waste of time, energy, brain power, resourses and money...just to be 1 inch bigger. My 27" (pip) tv is just fine and dandy... GET A LIFE PANASONIC PS> How do you get it to the repair shop?...lol
103" is great. I could sell all my furniture so it would fit, then take another $3K and buy it.
If it aint at Wal-mart than I can't afford it.
Besides my wife says it won't fit in our double-wide! LOL... Oh well... We just have to get a bigger double-wide before I can git me 1! LOLOLOL
Big Al and Josie-Mae
I would have to charge admission during football season just to pay for the monster! Yeah, I can just see my granson bangin' on the set with his baby bottle, "Justin, stop that!!!" BTW, does the warrantee include BLINDNESS after watching the set for so long? And I wonder what my ELECTRIC BILL will be after about a month or so??? Hey, I guess when MONEY is no object... what difference does it make!! Right?
Why do so many people in this thread have to act so jealous and petty? "Why make something that 80% of us can't afford." "This is only good news if you're rich." blah! You idiots.
It's research and development, you morons! Just like all new technology, it is expensive in the beginning, until they have made enough to learn how to mass produce it cost effectively, so that eventually you may have one. 80% of the population couldn't afford the first computers, so why should they have made those?
Well like my mom always says> Thou shall take thy tv in ones request. Actually i just made that up' i think taht tv would probably make you go blind in around 1 year if u watch it at least one hour a day. And i wanna be able to see some poontang for the rest of my like hell maybe even play with it:_)
WHAT THE POINT OF ALL THIS. MOST OF US CANT AFFORD WHAT WE HAVE NOW. IM SURE AT THE PRICES OF THE 102 INCH... THE WAREHOUSES ARE STILL OVER STOCKED
great...we made an unnecessarily huge TV...anybody notice the starving kids ALL OVER THE WORLD???
I just hope the person who would own this won't have to move somewhere else. I have a 42' plasma TV and a friend and I had a hard time moving it carefuly. Just imagine moving a 102' plasma TV. YOU'RE insane!!!!!
Is that in man inches or woman inches?
